Natural Remedies to Help Treat Anxiety

It can be tough to find anxiety relief. Some lean towards taking medication (along with therapy and other techniques), while others lean towards a more natural approach. Neither side is right nor wrong. It all depends on the person and what works best for them.

For those who wish to go the more natural route, here is a list of some natural remedies to help treat anxiety.

1- Staying Active

Studies show being active/exercising is great for your mental health. You can take a daily walk, go for a run, join a gym, play sports recreationally, etc.

2- Herbal Remedies

Lavender: Well known for its calming effect and its ability to reduce anxiety. It’s also known as a great sleep remedy, helping improve quality of sleep.

Chamomile: Another herb very well known for its calming effects. It’s great for treating insomnia and reducing anxiety.

Lemon Balm: Known to reduce symptoms of anxiety, such as nervousness and excitability.

Herbal supplements aren't monitored by the FDA the same way medications are. Despite enhanced quality control regulations in place since 2010, the quality of some supplements may still be an issue. Remember, natural doesn't always mean safe.

3- Aroma Therapy

An age-old way of treating your mind and body with natural smells where essential oils are put into a diffuser. Some of the best essential oils to help treat anxiety include lemon, lavender, sandalwood, clary sage.

4- Meditation

Studies show daily meditation is a very effective tool to treat anxiety symptoms. There are many meditation guides on YouTube. Here is one that we have used, but feel free to find one that works best for you!

5- Deep Breathing

Often used to help people with panic attacks and anxiety disorders. One breathing technique is the 4-3-4 breathing exercise. Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4 seconds, hold the air in your lungs for a count of 3 seconds, then exhale through your mouth for a count of 4 seconds. There are also a number of other breathing exercises you can try here.
